Self Defence and the 3 Stages of Street Violence

Wednesday, September 16th, 2009

Training for a street confrontation is very, very different from training in sport based martial arts, or martial art competitions. It is equally fair to say it is very different from doing sparring or martial art drills in a dojo.

In a street confrontation there are no rules, no referees, probably no one there to break it up and do you seriously think you can tap out ? In this situation anything goes and you have to expect the unexpected.

So how can we properly train for the unexpected ? Your training needs to include realistic rehearsal training and must include techniques and strategies based on what is happening out there.

For reality based training to be effective you must be exposed to, and learn how to deal with three main conflict stages.

Stage 1 – Pre Fight

Most situations can be avoided before they even start provided your training includes strategies, tactics and realistic rehearsal. Developing awareness skills, threat assessment and verbal skills should all form the beginnings of your pre fight training. Learning how to avoid confrontations both physically and mentally is a critical part of any realistic self defence program.

Stage 2 – In Fight

This is the stage that a great deal of self defence courses and martial art schools focus on. The problem here is most of them are based on tradition, set sequences or just theory.

Remember earlier I said you have to expect the unexpected. Not one confrontation is going to be the same and using complex forms or patterns for a certain situation is very unlikely to work in reality. The conflict stage is very unlikely going to be just you and a single opponent and your training needs to reflect the complexities and varieties of situation you could face. Training to fight one opponent is no longer realistic. What about ways to fight criminals with weapons, dealing with gang attacks, muggings, rape attacks, robberies ?

Does your training deal with the different levels of force needed to handle these different levels of violence ?

Stage 3 – Post Fight

There are many areas that your realistic self defence training should incorporate here as well. This may be administering first aid, effective escape methods, ways recall attacker description and incident details.

At Practical Self Protection we are committed to, and focus on, reality based self defence training. We focus on state of the art techniques and training methods that give you immediate results.

If you are considering learning self defence why settle for anything other than the best. Here at Practical Self Protection you will train in a proven and tested system that is effective, realistic and relevant to the world we live in.

Take your training to the next level and keep your training real.View Your Product Available For Download.http://betterlifeinformation.com/women/self-defense/

The Best in Self Defense

Tuesday, September 15th, 2009

“There have been many court records stating cases of rape, harass or physical attack. Most of these have women as their top victims, since men are believed to have the ability to defend themselves more. Yes, defend…. Women have been advised time and again to prepare themselves against aggressors that may attack them anytime possible. They are everywhere: the streets, the office, even at school. They may be people who are familiar or complete strangers. Most importantly their motives differ….

“Women, Defend Yourself Against Attackers And Aggressors Today!”

They may be rapist or just plain robbers. Either way, they represent “danger” to a streetwalker (especially women streetwalker). They ambush with their schemes and at times the usual kick at the groin or poking the eyes are not enough lifesavers unlike what was seen in movies. And though martial arts seemed like a cool way to get a kick-ass safety, there are other ways to do it-learning what self defense really means. Self defense is all about using the head and not whatever physical attacks necessary to blow down an oppressor. They may work though but everything is not always about “the way of the fists”. It’s a known fact that thinking before acting brings out the best in everything we try to do. Brawns are the best weapon ever and a background check on self defense would prove this claim as only 10 percent of it pertains to physical counter-moves. The remaining 90 percent are all about keeping calm and being aware of one’s surroundings to know how to prevent such ambush from the suspected attacker. Know who he is and how to fight him before he even attacks is the first thing to do. If things did get aggressive, it’s time to bring out those sharp ideas and strike back (get physical). Here’s how to prevent an attack. 1. Keep calm and cool An attacker would always look for easy targets. They would often look for women who are busy with their phones, have their hands full (like after going in the grocer) and seem fearful. Have a confident placing. In court records, cases have been posted where the victims are usually those who are unaware and are freaked out if they find someone following them. They usually end up in dark alleys where no one would be able to help them. Another fact is that attacking at once may only get the oppressor fired up that may lead the contact to be much worst. Keeping the chin up and looking like the girl who’s aware is a sure way to keeping the bad men away. These women have the tag “bring it on” posted on their foreheads. 2. They are not always at the dark Keep in mind that attackers are not always those who creep out from the dark. They may be people whom we call associates. There is this one sure way to keep their secret evil motives from manifesting, and keep us miles away at once. This is called de-escalation. De-escalation is speaking or acting in a way that may keep the worst from happening. Example of such is the throwing the wallet when a robber attacks instead of fighting back. Sometimes this method is for keeping one’s rage calmed down by agreeing with him or her: example is when harassed. These are ways to have their focus redirected thus keeping one away in a tight situation.

3. Learn safety measures Know the streets traveled as much as possible. Go to places where there are many people. Keep out of those where being alone means trouble. Know hang-outs which are safe. Try to convince friends the joints which you believe are safe from possible attackers. Also have a buddy when walking at night. Instant communication is also a must. Have the speed dial of your cell phones ready in case of emergency. More than that posts a written schedule of activities that they ought to know about. Be direct in saying where you’ll be going, with whom, and the time to come home. 4. It’s time to learn self-defense Be more aware than ever. There are moves that attacker may find themselves surprised. These are moves which they least expect before giving the kick at the groin and poking the eyes. It’s a great add to confidence if the techniques on fighting back can be learned. There are times, however, that rather than hand to hand combat, lectures in self defense classes give attention to ingenuity. A pen may be used as a weapon as an umbrella. A simple kick may not be martial arts yet it may do wonders. Inhalers (for asthmatic) and spray perfumes may also serve as pepper sprays giving the target a chance to get away fast. Remember, a good self defense class helps a person in sizing up the situation.

Anticipating an attacker means giving focus on learning from other’s past experiences and taking in the present to know how to keep safe. Self defense is not about getting aggressive, it’s about knowing how to keep one away from harm’s way. So for women who are the usual targets of assaults, here’s the best reminder to keep the attackers away: Think before you act. “View Your Product Available For Download Here.http://betterlifeinformation.com/women/self-defense/

Five Posture Tips For Self Defense

Monday, September 14th, 2009

Whether you’re using your hands or a self defense product such as a TASER, stun gun or pepper spray, posture counts! After a clear head, a prepared body is the most important aspect of self defense. Now it’s easy to get bogged down in useless information. Martial arts experts recommend dozens of different fighting stances, but most of the fine points belong to the “art” part of martial arts, not practical self protection. According to Self Defense ATL the average person should just keep a few things in mind when he or she believes it might be time to fight for safety. Let’s boil these down into five tips:

Keep Your Hands Up!

Boxers, MMA fighters and other full contact fighting methods all emphasize keeping your hands up to intercept blows to the head. Don’t worry about fancy hand gestures or making fists (”putting your dukes up” before the fight can increase the likelihood of an attack, since you’re signaling that you want to fight). If you feel threatened, get your hands in front of your body and between the potential attacker’s hands and your head. You can be very subtle about this by just “talking with your hands.” Stay relaxed and if the guy starts swinging, trust your instinct to flinch with your hands forward to intercept the blow. You may not blog it completely, but you could very well reduce its force, giving you time to draw pepper spray, a stun gun – or just run. This is a great reason to keep a cell phone stun gun or key ring-based self defense product, since you can hold them in a raised hand without looking threatening.

Tuck Your Chin!

“Women, Defend Yourself Against Attackers And Aggressors Today!”

A blow to the chin or jaw violently turns the head, causing a knockout. That’s why full contact fighters routinely keep their chins tucked. It makes the chin harder to hit, braces the jaw up against the shoulders and makes the head as a whole harder to knock around. Like hand position, chin tucking can be very subtle. Just dropping your chin an inch or two can be effective. Don’t bend your back (this makes it harder for you to move overall) just tuck your chin enough that you can’t turn your neck as far in each direction as usual (try it out) – a sign that you’re braces against your shoulders.

Keep Your Feet Shoulder-Width Apart!

When threatened, many people narrow the distance between their feet – a big mistake. This makes you easier to trip or shove around. On the other hand, big wide stances keep you from running effectively. Instead, keep your feet shoulder-width apart. For most people this is slightly wider than they think – a couple of inches in each direction. This gives you stability against being shoved, but still gives you enough mobility to run.

Bend Your Knees!

To generate the biomechanical power you need to run or fight you’ve got to bend your knees – not a lot, but enough to be able to push off of either leg. To use full body power you have to push off of the legs first. If your legs are already most extended you have very little room to build that initial momentum. Plus, if you’re pushed around bent knees let you push back to absorb the incoming force. Or step away completely. Once again, this can be a very slight bend – not enough to look like you want to fight.

Don’t Face Threats Head On!

Your body is designed so that many sensitive areas like your abdomen are more vulnerable from the front, where your hands can intercept oncoming danger. Nevertheless, if you suspect an attack is coming, stepping one foot back can help immensely by pointing the vulnerable front of your body away from attack, reducing your frontward profile, and providing stability against pushes and grabs. Don’t drop into a “stance.” Just take a normal step back. Make sure there’s space between your feet when viewed from the front to stay stable – you don’t want to have one foot directly behind the other, since that makes it easier to trip.

Practice – and Relax!

Practicing defensive postures will greatly increase the chance you’ll use them in a confrontation, giving you time to run, use pepper spray or a stun gun, protect yourself with your hands or use another weapon. If you’re not bound for a boxing or karate match all you need to do is be ready to use these posture tips naturally without making it a “fighting stance” You can use all of the tips in this article without appearing aggressive – but you’re ready to fight back and get away. Naturally, self defense products such as training DVDs, sprays, stun guns and formal classes can all increase your chances of success, but taking the first step never hurts.View Your Product Available For Download Here.http://betterlifeinformation.com/women/self-defense/

Women’s Self Defense Tips – The Ultimate Top 20

Friday, September 4th, 2009

Women are the targets of 90 % or more of all assaults from domestic violence to date rape to street crimes-just a fact. Guys you should be aware of these tips too. They’ll work for you and you can pass them along to the women in your life.

1. Get a self-defense program in place.

2. Get a self-defensive attitude. This will enhance your self-confidence and power to fight back. Building confidence in your ability to defend your self shows thru.

3. Use common sense and restraint. Everyone has choices on where they go and how they get there. Keep to well lit areas, go with a buddy, avoid dangerous areas.

4. Learn how to avoid a fight. It takes two to tangle. Take the high road and walk away when given the opportunity.

5. Keep practicing. The self-defense skills you learn should become second nature.

6. Be aware of where you are.

7. Hitchhiking is dangerous-use buses or taxis.

8. Never act or appear to be an easy target. Don’t look like victim. Most guys who assault women are not all that smart but they are not stupid either. Someone who is walking with their head down and an uncertain gait presents an easy target.

9. Have body language that exudes self-confidence.

10. Start screaming your head off. Then try biting, scratching eyes-anything you can do to defend your self.

11. Trust your instincts. Women especially are blessed with an uncanny knack for sensing things. They should use and trust that instinct. When you get a shiver down your spine be ready to react.

12. Get a survivor mentality. This starts with developing an awareness of your surroundings and aware of the fact that women are potential targets all their lives.

13. Don’t become paranoid. Just be aware!!

14. Your priorities are survival and escape. You don’t get style points. Fight dirty.

15. React quickly. An assault situation demands a speedy response not where’s my pepper spray.

16. Use anything you can get your hands on as a self defense weapon. A pen in your purse, keys, your fingernails-anything that might cause some damage.

17. Don’t be a provocative target. Getting drunk or high on drugs is akin to asking for trouble-even when with friends.

18. Learn some basic points on the body that yield the results you want. Eye gouges, groin kicks, the heal of the hand to the base of the nose, a hard punch to the ear all will get you a release.

19. Having a stun gun is not enough. Learn and know how to use them and practice using them. They will give you from 3-15 minutes to escape to get help or just escape and survive.

20. Your life is at stake here. I can’t stress this enough practice different scenarios so when (not if) the time comes you instinctively know what to do and it just happens reflexively.

Following these tips may end up saving your life. Remember the old saying “walk softly and carry a nasty pepper spray.”View Your Product Available For Download Here

Street Fighting Moves – The 4 Reasons Why Low Line Kicks Are More Effective For Street Fighting

Thursday, September 3rd, 2009

Have you noticed that the first thing that the novice martial artist wants to learn is how to do high and spectacular kicks to be used for self defense? Well, I’ve got news for you. This high-kick worship is one of the most fallacious concepts of self protection even conceived. The truth is that low-line kicks, that is kicks, below the waistline and even below the knee-line are much, much more effective. In this article, I will give you the 4 reasons why low-line kicks are much more effective for reality based fighting that your flying, spinning back kick to the face could ever be.

The 4 Reasons Why Low Line Kicks Are More Effective for Street Fighting

Reason #1 – Low Kicks Cannot Be Seen – The beauty and nature of a low line kick is that they are below the visual field and thus are not detected until they land. The type of kicks that I am talking about are like front kicks to the shin or closed-range shin kicks that you can deliver undetected to the Y of your opponent’s open legs into his groin.

Reason #2 – Low Kicks Do Not Require Hamstring Flexibility – Unlike trying to execute a round-house kick to the face of an opponent, a low line kick does not require that you warm up or have any unusual leg flexibility.

Reason #3 – These Kicks Are Not Age Dependent – Because no unusual physical conditioning is required, you can easily execute a kick such as this if you are 50, 60 or 70.

Reason #4 – Low Level Kicks Keep Your Feet Stable To The Ground – Unlike aerial, leaping, flying kicks, your feet remain stable on the ground and you little or no chance of missing your target or slipping and falling as you would were you to try a high flying kick.View Your Product Available For Download Here

5 Important Self Defense Moves For Women

Wednesday, September 2nd, 2009

Having some knowledge and preparation when it comes to protecting yourself will allow you to not only be safer, but also feel more confident when approached by a questionable stranger. This preparation may help you avoid a violent or invasive situation.

Preparing to protect yourself might involve taking a self defense class to learn a few solid moves or techniques. Here is a list of five important self defense strategies that every women should know (and practice) in order to keep themselves safer in the face of danger.

1. Above all, stay calm. While this is far easier said than done, it is by far the single most important factor in increasing your personal safety. Keeping your cool allows you to assess the situation, think about your reactions, and make a plan for your escape. Adrenaline starts to flow extremely quickly when we are threatened, and the shallow breathing and rapid heart rate can interfere with your rational thinking. Take some deep breaths, concentrate on remembering your self defense training, and plan your implementation.

2. If you are approached by someone demanding your wallet or your purse, the best thing you can do to protect yourself is to throw it as far away as you possibly can. If the assailant truly wants your money, they will go get it, allowing you to run away in a different direction.

3. Having a tool handy (such as your keys, umbrella, pen, etc.) and firmly gripped in your hand gives you an instant weapon. Do not hesitate to use this ‘weapon’ if someone attempts to grab you. Vulnerable places to strike include the face and neck areas. Quick movements will surprise your attacker, and surprise is truly your best weapon in a situation where someone is planning to overpower you.

4. When trying to avoid being grabbed or hit, moving in a triangular pattern (as opposed to moving in straight lines) makes your course unpredictable to someone reaching for you. Also, resisting the urge to back up-and instead lunging toward the attack-can throw off your assailant. Again, the element of surprise is in your favor in this situation. If you are running away from an attack, moving in a zig-zag manner will make it harder to get caught. This advice is also true for more dangerous situations (such as those involving a gun), as it is harder to hit a moving target than a still one or one moving in a straight line.

5. Some self defense courses will teach you to stomp on your attacker’s foot or elbow him in the ribs in the event that you are grabbed from behind. In fact, the most effective move you can make is to forcefully use the back of your own head to smash into your attacker’s face. Your skull is very hard, and will cause some serious pain if you can connect with his face. Often, this will be enough to have the grip released, allowing you to escape.

These are just a few hints that you should consider rehearsing in your mind as you review self defense strategies that will help keep you safe. The best way to stay safe is to avoid potentially dangerous situations completely, but, in case you ever do find yourself threatened, it’s important to know how to protect yourself.View Your Product Available For Download Here

RAD – It’s Awesome Self Defense For Girls!

Monday, August 31st, 2009

Rape, aggression, defense programs are spreading like wild fire across the country. Yakima, Washington recently hosted a RAD class of their own. Ladies both young and more mature can benefit from this type of course.

“Women, Defend Yourself Against Attackers And Aggressors Today!”

The RAD program is a national one. Many times the classes are taught by off duty police officers, this was the case in Yakima at their recent class. These programs can also be offered through private security or self defense training groups.

“We’re not teaching them how to fight,” Nate Henyan, Valhalla Security, said. “We’re teaching them how to create distance to get away.” The main philosophy in the RAD course is that running away from danger is the best course of action. It takes practice and some common sense to develop the skills the instructors are working to instill in these women.

Even if getting away is the overriding first choice the lessons do teach the pupils to fight back so that they are ready if the need presents itself. In order to make the classes as realistic as possible, and to give the students a chance to put what they have learned into action. The course instructors wear heaving padding made for this type of use. The heavy padding allows the women to give their responses with full force, no holding back necessary.

For the most part, the students have a chance to develop self confidence, verbal skills meant to help them talk their way out of trouble, and a cool head. The opportunity to learn and practice the skills taught in a RAD course is great for helping these women feel safe and more confident in their abilities. These skills all dovetail together to give women a better chance at getting out of a bad situation safely.

RAD courses can sometimes be offered through grants. During these tougher economic times a class like this can be a real stress reliever. It is also a good use of time that could really pay off if a bad situation ever arose. These courses offer a safe environment to learn in.

Check for a RAD course in your area for yourself or for those you love. There is ample information available through the internet. If you cannot find a course close enough for you to attend, consider working with the recourses available in your community and put one on yourself.

Help Save My Marriage – Relationship Advice For Couples Heading Towards Divorce

Friday, August 28th, 2009

“I need some advice to help save my marriage.” Is this something you’ve been saying recently? Have you and your spouse hit a crossroads and you wonder whether your relationship can survive? If this is indeed the case, there is help for you. Although it may feel as though your marriage is beyond repair, it’s likely not. There are several things you can do, beginning today, to ensure your relationship with your spouse improves and your family stays together.

Successful and Happy Marriage

Communication is obviously essential if you hope to have a mutually satisfying, fulfilling marriage. Most couples share everything about what they’re feeling early in the relationship. They’re open and honest and don’t think twice about telling each other when something is bothering them. Once children, career pressures and the day-to-day stresses of juggling bills enter the equation, some people start to hold in what they’re feeling so they don’t burden their partner. You need to share what you’re feeling with your partner and also encourage them to do the same. Ensure you approach the subject of an open and honest conversation in a non-threatening way. You have to reassure your spouse that you won’t verbally attack them when they are revealing what they feel. If you can be supportive with them, they’ll always feel safe and comfortable talking about the relationship with you.

Be more positive when you’re with your partner and let that seep into how you treat them. When a relationship is beginning to come apart it’s easy to focus just on the negative aspects of your partner. Make a point to only think about the things about your spouse you love. Tell them each and every day how thankful you are for what they bring to your life. As simple as this seems, it can greatly impact a relationship. When a person feels their partner is being more positive and caring, they’ll reflect that in their own behaviour and will also be more affirmative.
