How to Choose the Right Dog Breed For You

Wednesday, September 16th, 2009

Although dogs have been domesticated for a long time now, their personalities still differ from one breed to the other. Chihuahuas are cute, but did you know that they are not suitable for families with small children, because of their territorial and impatient nature?

So how do you go about choosing the right dog breed for you?

You must sit down and carefully consider what your lifestyle is like, and how much time, money and space you can dedicate to your new companion. How you live and who you are as a person, will dictate what type of dog will suit your lifestyle, your own personality, and your accommodation. DON’T make the mistake many new dog owners make and just pick a puppy ’cause it’s real cute… you are likely to clash later…

Here’s a simple checklist of the most important considerations when choosing the right dog breed for you.

Your Living Arrangements

Do you live in a one-bedroom apartment or a house? If it’s the former, go with a small-sized pup like a Pomeranian or Toy Poodle. If your area is large enough for a medium or large dog, you can choose breeds among German Shepherd, Golden Retriever or even a Great Dane.

Your Family Arrangements

Do you have children or do you live alone? Some dogs work well with children like Golden Retrievers or Siberian Huskys. On the other hand, some dogs are aloof especially with children like a Chihuahua or a Yorkshire Terrier. You also have to take into account any pre-existing pets in your household. If you have cats or bunnies you need to make sure the new puppy you bring in is tolerating.

Activity Levels

If you’re the type who loves outdoorsy stuff like running or hiking, the best breed for you might be American Foxhound, English Setter or even a Standard Poodle. But if you’re the type who loves to stay at home and rest, these breeds might be suitable for your lifestyle: Chihuahua, Basset Hound or Pekingese.

Match the breed to your existing activity levels – be truthful with yourself. If you spend your nights infront of the TV, but you’d love to start walking in the evenings, don’t get an overly active dog in the hope that it will motivate you… These type of plans usually fail, and then you’re left with a dog that’s unhappy and destructive because it is bored and locked up most of the day – be realistic.

Grooming and Food Expenses

It’s kind of logical that large dogs consume large amounts of food and small dogs consume less. But you’d be surprised at just how much a Grate Dane needs to eat in a day. So when considering a dog breed, and you’re unsure of their food requirements, give your vet a call and ask him to advise you.

Another cost to consider when getting a pooch is how much grooming will he need. With some of the shorter coat dogs, you can do the grooming yourself. But dog breeds like Shih Tzu, Lhasa Apso, and the Yorkshire Terrier needs daily grooming – and at least monthly taking to the doggy parlor. So take into account the time and money you’re willing to spend on caring for your dog.

Trainability

Different dog breeds take different amounts of time to obedience train, so consider if you feel you’d want to train your puppy, or if you don’t really mind a whole lot.

Vet Bills

OK, taking a dog into your care is a big responsibility. You have to love it, feed it, groom it, but you also have to make sure its health care is also looked after. In that respect, cats are much easier to take care of.

Vet bills are a big chunk of what you will spend on your pooch over your joint existence, so you need to carefully consider if it is something you can afford month after month, and year after year. There’s nothing more heart-wrenching than having to let go of your beloved pet 5 years into your relationship, because you’re having to choose between vet bills and feeding your children.

Sounds extreme, but it is a serious point. Make sure you find out how much it will cost for vet visits, vaccinations, treats, and toys. Then consider taking pet insurance just in case something goes wrong and you need cash for treatment.

In conclusion – take your time to choose a suitable canine mate. Consider that your dog is likely to be a part of your life for the next 15 or even 20 years. That is pretty permanent – so don’t leave it to chance. Make sure your personality and lifestyle suites the dog breed you choose and you’re more likely to have a hassle-free loving and lasting relationship with your dog.

Scottish Folds. earmark my online pet store

Tuesday, September 15th, 2009

The foremost characteristic distinguishing the Scottish Fold cat is its small ears which fold forward and downward, giving it an impish look. Sweet-tempered and attentive, devoted, but not demanding the “Fold” makes a perfect pet.

Almost everyone has some pet or another today. There are so many different ones. From fish to cats and everything in between, people can choose almost whatever they want and make a pet out of it. Remeber pet rocks? You may find barn yard animals with collars and leashes. You could run into turtles in bowls and birds in cages. So does the pet owner go to the local shop or the pet store online for relevant supplies?

There is more choices online, and a site just geared for the supplies that you need.

The online pet shops usually are specialty stores. Many shops focus on one main niche. When you browse the catalog of the online pet stores, you will discover many different items you never knew existed. These e-stores can carry products the local shops cannot because they have drop ship services. This means when you order from the pet store online, the items will be delivered to you directly from a warehouse rather than the store itself. There is no inventory cluttering up the aisle ways.

If you need a large breeding cage you can find it from an online pet merchant. In fact, you can find just about anything you would need for the little or big birds. From food to toys, the online pet store will have what you desire for the care of your furry friends.

Low prices.

Low prices are normally a real benefit of the e-commerce pet stores which carry bird supplies. The prices are lower and the quality of products you receive from the online pet supplies shops are top of the line.

Online pet stores do not have to worry about buying power. They have a worldwide client base. These shops are able to keep their prices affordable, offering some items the local stores simply cannot stock. This is because the pet stores found on the world wide web have their own specialties. There are groups that focus on bird sales. Another devotes their attention to the fish. Still another deals with things like reptiles or snakes.

Quality service.

I explained how Scottish Fold kittens are not born with folded ears. The ears of the kittens that carry the gene start folding usually about the 21st day, starting with the outer edge of the ear near the base.

A good match up to explain how to clean cat ears and to sell cleaning products!

You also can find good quality items from an online store. You can almost always locate what you need, and usually useful items you did not know existed. Being the expert in your animal field, what ever it maybe, is your big advantage in the online market place. The prices are reasonable. The service is good. Take a look at what is available. You may be surprised by the advantages of owning an online exotic pet niche store.View Your Product Available For Download Here.http://betterlifeinformation.com/pet-care/minipets/

Pet Grooming Tips

Friday, September 4th, 2009

Pets should always look their best. The fur should exude a healthy sheen while the nails should be cut to a reasonable length. And he should smell good, too! After all, a well-groomed pet is most likely a healthy pet. Pets know this and have figured out a way to keep clean. They have their own grooming technique. A dog can roll on the ground and chew on a mat that’s tangled in his fur. A cat can spend all day licking her fur until she feels reasonably clean. But that’s not enough.

So here’s an article that can help you get the right grooming technique so that you help your pet look their best.

Be Touchy. Sometimes a pet struggles when being held because it’s not used to being handled. So make it a habit to touch your dog as part of your time together. Touch and pet him, especially in areas which are particularly sensitive. These include the belly, behind the ears, the tail, the feet and back.

Keep it short and Sweet. At least during the first few sessions, when your pet is not yet used to the grooming. 5 to 10 minutes ought to do the trick. Then when your pet is used to your fussing and attention, you can slowly extend the time.

Let Your Admiration Be Heard. Pets love to hear praises, so be sure to compliment him loudly. He will love it, especially after he has been good and sat quietly while your groom him.

Grooming time is not play time. Sometimes, pets feel playful when you are grooming them. Although you want your pet to enjoy grooming, it should not be treated as playtime, or else your pet will always fool around during your sessions. Also, don’t let him think that your grooming tools are toys.

Start ‘em Young. When you start grooming your pet while they are young, they will naturally submit to your fussing even when they grow bigger.View Your Product Available For Download Here

Choosing the Best Doggie Day Care – Do Your Research

Thursday, September 3rd, 2009

Just like selecting a day care provider for your child, selecting a doggie day care for your canine friend is a huge decision. It doesn’t matter if your dog is going 1 day or 5 days a week, you need to be familiar with the staff and daily operations of the day care center. The concept of doggie daycare has become a real popular business venture over the past few years, so many of them have started to pop up all over the place. You just want to be sure that you are dropping your dog off to a reputable place.

Finally, you are able to find out everything you want to know about your Boxer Dog to create a wonderful relationship and have the most fun time ever…

One thing that you must demand in a day care is that there is a certified trainer on the premises at all times. A good owner will want to use that as a selling point. You don’t want to drop your dog off to a place where it isn’t getting challenged. Even if you work with your dog each day, training them, you could lose a whole week worth of work by dropping them off to a place that just lets the dogs run wild.

You should also visit the place twice, once announced and then unannounced. Your first visit you should make an appointment. Take a tour of the place and ask a lot of questions. You want to be sure that they have access to a vet. Check the cleanliness of the place as well. The next visit you should just “stop by”. Does it look the same way it did when you went for your appointment? The thought process is that anyone can look to be running a reputable business if they know someone is coming. The real test is what it looks like when they don’t expect visitors. If it looks the exact same way it did during your announced visit, then you might have a winner.

While many non-dog lovers might think that this is crazy, dog lovers know that they are part of the family and should be treated as such. Once you find a good doggie day care, you will have peace of mind dropping your fury friend off each.View Your Product Available For Download Here

Cat Grooming – How the Experts Find a Professional Pet Groomer and Cure Cat Bad Breath

Monday, August 31st, 2009

Some owners may find it challenging to safely and properly groom an older pet. When your cat needs grooming in her senior years, great patience and skill are necessary to ensure that she is comfortable and secure.

For this reason, many owners may prefer to pay a professional pet groomer to tend to their aging cat’s grooming needs. One way to find a reputable groomer is to ask friends, relatives and coworkers who own cats to recommend someone.

If possible, find a cat only groomer. He will have lots of experience dealing with cats, and your feline will not be frightened or distracted by the scents and sounds of dogs or other animals in the establishment.

Choose a groomer who is friendly, patient, and who takes the time to explain her service to you. Make sure that he has experience dealing with older animals. Ask to tour the facility and make sure it is clean, and see if the groomer will let you watch her groom someone else’s cat to see how he interacts with and handles the animal.

Get references from all groomers you visit and check them. When you find a groomer you would like to use, bring your cat in for a first time visit. Sit with her while the groomer is working, and watch how the process is done.

Talk to your senior in a soothing voice if she becomes scared or nervous. If your cat becomes very upset, you may want to consider trying to groom her at home yourself or perhaps your vet can refer you to an at home grooming service.

Your cat should not have chronically bad breath. If she does, here are some possible causes:

- Diet: Some foods, especially soft foods, leave particles on the teeth and gums and attract bacteria that cause bad breath. A change of food may help. If it does not, talk to your vet.

- Gum disease: Red, puffy gums in an adult cat indicate disease or infection. See your vet.

- Abscesses: Your cat may hide the pain, but an infected or abscessed tooth requires veterinary attention to prevent serious complications.

- Illness: Problems farther down the digestive tract may cause bad breath. See your vet.

It doesn’t matter what type of animal that you own, they all need care and love to some degree, however some animals can be slightly easier to care for than others. If you own a goldfish, then here are some important pet care tips for taking care of your fish so that it has a happy and healthy life:

1- Always make sure that you have a tank or a bowl that is big enough for your fish. If you have more than one fish, then you will need a larger bowl. And don’t forget, fish grow just like any other animal so when they become too big you must get them a bigger living environment.

2- An important pet care tip when it comes to fish and goldfish is that you should never over feed them. Fish are not like us, they do not know when they are hungry and will continue to eat even when you give them too much. Try to feed your fish around two times a day and only sprinkle a finger full of food on the top of the water this is plenty for a goldfish.

3- Another important pet care tip for goldfish is to always keep the tank or bowl clean. Scum can build up on the glass and the water can get really dirty, so it is imperative that you clean your goldfish bowl at least once a week.

4- Remember fish are not the same as dogs and cats and other pets, they should not be handled as they are cold blooded animals and the heat from your hands can end up killing them.

Here are some important pet care tips that you should remember when it comes to caring for a new cat or kitten:

1- Cats and kittens require lots of attention and taking care of, that said a cat can be pretty self sufficient and will spend a lot of time going out on his own. It is important that you make sure your cat is well taken care of, make sure that he has a collar with and ID tag on it just in case he gets lost.

2- An important pet care tip to remember is that cats need check ups just like you and me, so you should make sure you take your cat to see a vet regularly for injections to protect against disease when they are out and about.
